Masseter Botulinum Toxin Near Mirdif Dubai
Masseter botulinum toxin near Mirdif Dubai draws two completely different patients, and they need different conversations. Some arrive because they grind their teeth at night, wake with a sore jaw, and their dentist has mentioned the wear. Others arrive because they want a narrower lower face. Same muscle, same injection, entirely different assessment and expectations — and for the second group, a question somebody has to answer before anything gets booked. Dermabloom Medical Center sits at Villa 44C, 83rd Street in Mirdif. Call 04 268 8226 to arrange an assessment.
Two Reasons, Two Conversations
The masseter is the thick muscle you can feel bulge at the angle of your jaw when you clench. It closes your jaw, it does so with considerable force, and in some people it works far harder than it needs to.
Relaxing it partially achieves two things at once: it reduces how hard you can clench, and over time it reduces the muscle’s bulk. The first is what interests you if you grind. The second is what interests you if you want a slimmer jaw. Both follow from the same treatment, which is why clinics blur them together — but the assessment, the realistic outcome and the follow-up all differ, so this page keeps them apart.
If You Grind Your Teeth or Your Jaw Aches
Grinding and clenching, medically bruxism, wears down enamel, cracks fillings, produces morning jaw ache and headaches around the temples, and in some people contributes to jaw joint pain.
Reducing the force your masseter can generate lowers the damage that grinding does and often settles the ache. Many patients notice the morning tension go before they notice anything about their jaw shape.
Now the part clinics tend to skip. This treatment does not stop you grinding. Grinding is a behaviour driven by sleep patterns, stress and sometimes airway issues, and none of that changes. What changes is the force behind it. So your teeth still make contact at night, which means your dental splint stays in use and your dentist stays involved. Anyone telling you injections replace a splint is overselling it.
Worth knowing too: persistent jaw ache is not always muscular. Jaw joint problems, dental issues and referred pain from elsewhere all present similarly, so if nobody has examined your teeth and joint properly, start there rather than here.
If You Want a Narrower Jaw
Reducing masseter bulk narrows the lower face and softens a square jawline. It works, it is popular, and it is one of the more requested treatments in this region.
It also has a strict condition attached, which the next section covers, and it works on a much slower timetable than patients expect. Nobody gets a slimmer face next week.
Is Your Wide Jaw Actually Muscle?
This decides whether the treatment can help you at all, and it is the question to settle before you book anywhere.
A wide lower face comes from one of three things, or a combination:
- Masseter muscle bulk. Treatable with this approach. You can often feel it yourself — clench hard, and if a firm mound pushes out at the jaw angle, muscle is contributing.
- The shape of your jawbone. A wide mandibular angle is bone. Botulinum toxin does nothing to bone, and no course of injections will change it.
- Buccal fat and soft tissue. Also unaffected by this treatment.
Patients whose width is mostly skeletal sometimes go through several courses, see almost no change, and conclude the treatment does not work. It worked exactly as it should; it was simply never the right treatment for their anatomy. We examine the jaw with you clenching and relaxed before agreeing to anything, and we will tell you if muscle is not the main contributor.
Why This Takes Weeks Rather Than Days
If you have had upper-face treatment, forget that timetable. The upper face settles in about two weeks. The masseter does not.
Reduced clenching strength arrives first, often within one to two weeks, and grinding patients frequently report easier mornings around then. Visible narrowing takes much longer, because the muscle has to lose bulk from disuse rather than simply relax. Expect the first noticeable change somewhere around six weeks and the fuller effect nearer three months.
Two consequences. If you are treating jaw shape for an event, start at least three months ahead. And do not judge the result at four weeks or push for more treatment then — that is how patients end up overtreated.
What Repeated Courses Do Over Years
The effect wears off across roughly four to six months, longer than most other areas, so patients typically return two or three times a year at first.
Here is the longer view. Each course leaves the muscle a little smaller, and repeated courses over several years produce progressive atrophy that becomes difficult to reverse. For some patients that is precisely the goal, and treatment intervals often stretch out over time as they need less.
But it deserves thinking about before you start, particularly if you are in your twenties. A face maintained on this treatment for a decade is not the same as a face that had one course. Muscle contributes to how the lower face looks, and losing a great deal of it is not universally flattering as you age. We tend to space treatment further apart than patients initially ask for, and that is deliberate.
The Risk Nobody Mentions: Losing Support
The masseter does not only create width. It also gives the lower face structural support, and that matters more as skin loses elasticity.
In an older patient with some laxity already, shrinking the muscle can leave the overlying tissue with less underneath it to sit on. The result reads as sagging or jowling rather than a sharper jawline, which is the opposite of what anyone wanted. It ranks among the more disappointing outcomes in aesthetics precisely because the treatment did exactly what it should.
Younger patients with firm skin rarely encounter this. Where laxity is already part of the picture, jaw slimming is frequently the wrong choice, and we will say so and discuss what addresses laxity instead.
Other Things That Can Go Wrong
- Chewing fatigue, common on a first course. Tough steak, hard bread and chewing gum feel like more work for a few weeks.
- Asymmetry, where one side responds more than the other. Usually correctable at review.
- A bulge on clenching, where part of the muscle stays active and pushes outward oddly. Comes down to placement.
- An altered smile, uncommon, from injecting too far forward or too high where nearby muscles help you smile.
- Aching or tenderness in the jaw for a few days.
- Bruising at the injection points.
- A hollow look beneath the cheekbone after repeated heavy courses.
- Very little response, which usually means the width was not muscular after all.
When Treatment Is Not Appropriate
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- A neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis
- Previous allergic reaction to botulinum toxin
- Active infection or inflamed skin over the jaw
- Bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medication
- Jaw width that is mainly skeletal rather than muscular
- Existing lower-face laxity, for cosmetic slimming specifically
- Undiagnosed jaw pain, which needs examining before treating
On cost and cover: treatment for grinding and jaw pain is a medical indication, while jaw slimming is cosmetic, and insurers treat those categories differently. Our dermatology consultation page explains how cover and referrals generally work in Dubai. Check your own policy before assuming either way.
DHA restricts fillers and botulinum toxin injections to registered medical consultants and specialist physicians in licensed facilities, and you can check the register yourself. Our full face page covers that alongside the other facial regions.
The Days After Treatment
- Stay upright for four hours
- Avoid massaging or pressing the jaw area
- Skip the gym, sauna and steam room for 24 hours
- Eat softer food for the first few days if chewing feels like effort
- Keep using your dental splint if you grind
- Expect no visible change for several weeks, and resist judging it early
- Come back at four to six weeks so we can check symmetry and progress

Frequently Asked Questions
Will masseter treatment stop me grinding my teeth?
No. It reduces the force your jaw can generate, which lowers the damage and often settles the morning ache, but grinding is a behaviour driven by sleep, stress and sometimes airway issues, and that continues. Keep using your dental splint and keep your dentist involved.
How do I know if my wide jaw is muscle or bone?
Clench hard and feel the angle of your jaw. A firm mound pushing outward suggests muscle is contributing. A wide jawbone or buccal fat will not respond to this treatment at all, so we examine your jaw clenched and relaxed before agreeing to anything.
How long until my jaw looks slimmer?
Reduced clenching strength arrives within one to two weeks, but visible narrowing takes much longer because the muscle has to lose bulk from disuse. Expect the first noticeable change around six weeks and the fuller effect nearer three months.
How long does masseter treatment last?
Roughly four to six months, which is longer than most other treated areas. Patients typically return two or three times a year at first, and intervals often stretch out as they need less.
Will my chewing feel weaker?
Often on a first course. Tough steak, hard bread and chewing gum feel like more effort for a few weeks. Eat softer food early on if it bothers you, and it settles as your muscle adapts.
What happens if I keep having masseter treatment for years?
Each course leaves the muscle slightly smaller, and repeated treatment over several years causes progressive atrophy that becomes hard to reverse. Some patients want exactly that. It still deserves thought before you start, particularly in your twenties, since muscle contributes to how the lower face looks as you age.
Can jaw slimming make my face look saggy?
It can, in patients who already have some laxity. The masseter gives the lower face structural support, so shrinking it leaves overlying tissue with less underneath. That reads as jowling rather than a sharper jawline, which is why we often advise against slimming where laxity is already present.
Is masseter treatment covered by insurance?
Treatment for grinding and jaw pain is a medical indication, while jaw slimming is cosmetic, and insurers treat those differently. Cover also depends on your policy and network, so check your wording before booking if you intend to claim.
Does masseter treatment hurt?
The injections sting briefly and take seconds. The area can ache or feel tender for a few days afterwards, rather like the day after heavy chewing.
How soon before a wedding should I have masseter treatment?
At least three months ahead if you are treating jaw shape, since the visible change builds slowly. Booking six weeks out will not give you the result you are picturing.
