Smile Lines Near Mirdif Dubai
Smile lines near Mirdif Dubai bring more patients through the door than almost any other single complaint, and most of them are asking for the wrong treatment. Not because they are foolish, but because the obvious answer is wrong: the line running from your nose to the corner of your mouth is rarely the actual problem, and filling it directly is what produces the heavy, over-treated look you can spot on other people without being able to name why. Dermabloom Medical Center sits at Villa 44C, 83rd Street in Mirdif. Call 04 268 8226 for an assessment.
Which Lines Do You Mean?
Four different things travel under this name, and they need four different treatments.
Nasolabial folds run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. Most people mean these, and this page is mainly about them.
Crow’s feet fan out from the outer corners of the eyes when you smile. Some people call these smile lines too, reasonably enough, and they respond to something completely different.
Marionette lines run downward from the mouth corners toward the chin. They often appear alongside nasolabial folds and share a cause.
Lip lines are the fine vertical creases on the upper lip. Different problem again.
Worth establishing which yours are before reading further, because the answers diverge sharply.
Everyone Has Nasolabial Folds, Including Babies
Look at any infant laughing and you will see them. The fold is not a wrinkle, a flaw or a sign of anything. It marks the boundary between the mobile tissue of your cheek and the tissue anchored to the muscles around your mouth, and that boundary exists at every age.
Which reframes the question usefully. You are not asking why you have a line, because you have always had one. You are asking what changed to make it deeper.
It also sets a sensible target. Nobody should be trying to erase a nasolabial fold, and a face with none looks wrong in a way people struggle to articulate. Softening a fold that has deepened is achievable. Removing it is neither possible nor desirable.
What Actually Changed
Volume above the fold, mostly.
The mid-face loses fat and bone support over time, and the tissue that remains sits lower than it did. But the fold itself cannot move, because muscle anchors the tissue below it. So descending cheek tissue piles up against a fixed boundary, and the crease deepens as a consequence.
Skin quality contributes as well. Collagen loss and years of sun exposure mean the crease etches into the skin rather than simply folding, and once that has happened it stays visible even at rest, and restoring volume no longer clears it.
Weight loss accelerates all of it. So does sleeping consistently on one side, which is why plenty of people have one fold noticeably deeper than the other.
Why Filling the Line Is Usually Wrong
Here is the mechanical problem with the obvious approach.
Injecting into the fold adds volume below a boundary that is already under pressure from above. Rather than releasing the crease, it pushes it forward. The fold becomes fuller instead of shallower, the area reads as heavy, and the face develops that curved shelf running down from the nose that most people recognise instantly as work.
Direct filling of this area also enters a zone the literature repeatedly names among the higher-risk regions for vascular complications, because the facial artery runs nearby. Our face filler page covers that risk map and the warning signs.
Small amounts placed carefully in the fold do have a role, usually finishing rather than leading a plan. But a clinic whose first proposal is to fill the crease itself is treating the symptom.
Treating What Caused It
Restoring support higher in the face lifts the tissue off that fixed boundary, which softens the fold from above rather than pushing it from below.
Practically, that means cheek and mid-face volume. The change looks subtler in the mirror at the treated area and more obvious in the fold you came in about, which patients find counterintuitive until they see it. The mid-face also sits in a lower-risk region than the fold itself, and results there last well.
Where marionette lines have appeared alongside, the same logic applies with the addition of support around the chin and jawline, since those lines deepen as the lower face loses its scaffolding too.
A useful test at home: put a finger just below your cheekbone and push the tissue gently upward and outward. If your fold softens noticeably, your mid-face is the answer rather than the fold.
When the Line Is Skin Rather Than Volume
Some folds persist even after proper volume restoration, because the crease has etched into the skin itself rather than draping over a shadow.
Check yours by stretching the skin gently sideways with two fingers. A line that disappears entirely is a fold. A line still faintly visible in stretched skin has become a crease in its own right, and volume will not remove it.
Etched lines respond to treatments aimed at the skin: resurfacing, microneedling and regenerative options that improve collagen. Our skin treatment page maps those, and polynucleotides target skin quality specifically. Most patients with a long-standing deep fold have both components and need both addressed, in that order.
Why Botulinum Toxin Is Not the Answer Here
Patients ask about this constantly, so to be direct: it does not treat nasolabial folds, and attempting it causes problems.
The muscles running through this region lift your upper lip and cheek when you smile. Weakening them does not soften the fold, but it does flatten your smile and frequently makes it asymmetrical, because the effect rarely lands evenly on both sides. It is one of the more recognisable bad outcomes in aesthetic medicine.
Toxin has a genuine role elsewhere in the face, and our upper face page covers where it works. This is not one of those places.
If You Meant Crow’s Feet
Different mechanism entirely. Those lines come from the muscle that closes your eye, so botulinum toxin is the appropriate treatment and works well. Where the line remains visible at rest, the skin has creased and needs skin-directed treatment alongside. Details on our upper face page.
If You Meant Lip Lines
The fine vertical creases on the upper lip come from skin quality, sun damage and repeated pursing rather than from volume. Filling the lip does not remove them and can make them more obvious, which our lip filler page explains. Resurfacing and regenerative treatment address them properly.
A Realistic Plan
For most patients with deepened nasolabial folds, the sequence runs: restore mid-face support first, review after the swelling settles, then decide whether anything else earns its place. A meaningful number need nothing further.
Where a crease remains, skin-directed treatment follows, and it works better once the volume beneath is correct. Only after both would a small amount go into the fold itself, and often it does not.
Expect softening rather than disappearance. Individual results vary with skin type, age, degree of volume loss and how consistently you protect your skin.
Where We Would Say No
- An expectation that treatment will erase the fold entirely
- Significant skin laxity, where added volume worsens the drape
- A request to fill the fold before assessing the mid-face
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active infection or inflamed skin in the area
- Previous granulomas or nodules after filler
- Autoimmune or granulomatous conditions
- Bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medication
- Permanent filler already in the area
- A request for botulinum toxin to treat nasolabial folds
DHA restricts filler injection to registered medical consultants and specialist physicians in licensed facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are smile lines?
Usually the nasolabial folds running from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, though some people use the term for crow’s feet, marionette lines or lip lines. Those four need four different treatments, so establish which yours are first.
Can smile lines be removed completely?
No, and they should not be. The fold marks the boundary between your cheek and the tissue around your mouth, and everyone has one, including babies. Softening a fold that has deepened is realistic. Erasing it looks wrong.
Why did my smile lines get deeper?
Mostly because the mid-face lost volume and the remaining tissue sits lower, piling against a boundary that cannot move. Skin quality contributes as the crease etches in, and weight loss accelerates both. Sleeping on one side explains why many people have one deeper fold.
Why not just fill the line?
Because adding volume below a boundary already under pressure pushes the crease forward instead of releasing it. The fold becomes fuller rather than shallower, which produces the heavy shelf people recognise as obvious work. It is also a higher-risk area for vascular complications.
What works instead of filling the fold?
Restoring cheek and mid-face support, which lifts tissue off the fixed boundary and softens the fold from above. The visible change appears in the fold rather than at the treated area, which surprises patients until they see it.
How can I tell whether mine is volume or skin?
Stretch the skin gently sideways with two fingers. A line that vanishes entirely is a fold and responds to volume. A line still faintly visible in stretched skin has etched into the skin and needs resurfacing or regenerative treatment instead.
Will botulinum toxin help my smile lines?
Not for nasolabial folds. The muscles there lift your upper lip when you smile, so weakening them flattens your smile and often makes it asymmetrical without softening the fold. For crow’s feet, however, it is the right treatment.
Is there a test I can do at home?
Put a finger just below your cheekbone and push gently upward and outward. If your fold softens noticeably, mid-face support is your answer rather than filling the crease.
Why is one of my folds deeper than the other?
Faces are not symmetrical to begin with, and consistently sleeping on one side deepens the fold on that side over years. Treatment accounts for the difference rather than treating both identically.
How long will the result last?
Mid-face volume typically holds a year or more, since the area moves comparatively little. Skin-directed treatment for etched creases works cumulatively and needs maintenance. Expect softening rather than disappearance in either case.
